Ezra’s sentencing process started this morning (Aug 16′ 2009). Ezra and the “Committee for Ezra Nawi” wish to thank and express our appreciation to all those who testified on his behalf, came to court, wrote letters or signed petitions.

As part of today’s hearing 6 witnesses testified on Ezra’s behalf and dozens of letters written by different concerned Israeli citizens were submitted to the court. Attorney Leah Tzemel also submitted the international letter of support that was signed by over 20,000 people from all over the world. The prosecution on the other hand asked the court to sentence Ezra for a lengthy incarceration. We hope the judge will take into account the amazing admiration and support for Ezra that was shown today in court.

Your love and support are strengthening Ezra during this difficult time and are encouraging him to continue his important activities.

Sentencing will take place on the 21 of September at the Peace Court at 8:30 am. Further information will be sent as the date will approach.

היום (16/8/09) התקיים הדיון לטיעונים בעונש במשפטו של עזרא. אנו רוצים להודות בשם עזרא לכל מי שהשקיעו מאמץ, הגיעו לבית-המשפט, העידו למענו, כתבו עדויות אופי וחתמו על העצומה.

במסגרת הדיון העידו 6 עדים מטעם ההגנה על אופיו ופועלו של עזרא והוגשו עשרות מכתבים שנכתבו ע”י אזרחים ישראלים שונים המביעים את תמיכתם בו. בנוסף, הגישה העו”ד לאה צמל את מכתב התמיכה הבינלאומי עליו חתמו למעלה מ-20,000 איש ואשה מכל העולם. אל מול גילויי התמיכה הרבים ביקשה התביעה מהשופטת זיסקינד לגזור כנגד עזרא מאסר ממושך בפועל. אנו מקוים שהשופטת התרשמה מעדויות האופי והמכתבים הרבים ולא תיענה לבקשת התביעה.

גילויי התמיכה והאהבה מחזקים את עזרא, ומאפשרים לו להמשיך בפעילותו החשובה והאמיצה, למרות הקושי והמתח הכרוכים בתהליך המשפטי המייגע.

גזר הדין ינתן ביום ב’, ה – 21/9, בשעה 8:30 בבית המשפט השלום.

Demonstration at Sheikah Jarrah – We Don’t Agree to Settlements in East Jerusalem!

Right-wing elements are mobilizing support for construction in East Jerusalem, and on this Sunday they are holding a festive dinner for 100 people at the controversial site of the Shepherd Hotel, Sheikh Jarrah.

Among the guests will be Republican Mike Huckabee who apparently intends to run for the presidency in the United States in 2012. According to the NRG news report, the dinner will also be hosting a number of Israeli ministers, and Knesset members.

The settlers had seized the houses an hour after more than 200 armed Israeli police invaded the houses and threw the Hannouns and Ghawis out into the streets on August 2, 2009. Since then, the families have been camped out on the sidewalk across their stolen homes, sleeping on mattresses, without causing any disturbances to the Jewish settlers.

They are still holding out hope that justice will be restored and the houses which they have always lived in will be restored to them.

Ezra, the epitome of nonviolent resistance and human rights defender, pleaded not guilty on all charges, and refuses to accept a plea bargain.

On Sunday, Ezra might be sent to jail.

Last night in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah there was a vigil, a memorial to the families’ homes from which they were evicted. First they were refugees and now they are homeless. After weeks of legal battles, sit-ins and press conferences, several hundreds gathered to acknowledge a critical defeat in the battle over the future of this land and the two peoples who want to live here in peace.

Yes, the Supreme Court ruled, yes, the Palestinians were evicted in accordance with the law and yes, the Jews who moved in there did so legally. But this is a matter of the future viability of a Palestinian state, and the true test, or more correctly, disclosure of Israel’s true intentions and integrity. Assuming the Jews who moved into these houses (and now pray on the rooftops looking down on the newly homeless families in the street), did in fact live there at some point, this only strengthens the argument that all Palestinian refugees are entitled to reclaim their lost homes all over Israel. Israel’s legal system has set this precedent. It has given legal credibility to the 7 million Palestinians who once lived somewhere in Israel and cannot return.

Israel could not be making it any clearer that its policy is to allow, encourage and facilitate Jewish settlement anywhere and everywhere it wishes, right in the middle of Palestinian communities, with the ultimate aim of clearing them out.

How can Israel, in its claim to represent the Jewish people, who have experienced the worst forms of discrimination, violence, ghettoization and homelessness, now inflict it on another people? And what exactly is it trying to achieve? Have we heard any Israeli politician actually articulate what the objective is here, other than showing off the country’s ability to kick people out and take over whatever place they want? What does Israel think it will gain from these reprehensible actions?

Eviction of Arab families from Sheikh Jerrah, East Jerusalem, 2.8.09

The families have not yet received a chance to present all of their arguments in court regarding the evictions from their houses, because the Supreme court of justice refused to acknowledge the Ottoman documents brought from the Turkish archives. The families attorney claims these documents prove the land was never owned by jews, but leased to them during the ottoman rule.

The families of Hannoun and Gawi are made up of over 50 people, amongst them over 10 children, and are currently homeless.

Join us at a protest watch with the families, and with Palestinian, Israeli and International organizations, out side their houses in Sheikh Jarrah, at 20:00 this monday 10.8. Please bring candles.

We also ask of you to stay with the families in solidarity, outside their occupied houses, over the coming nights.

כידוע, במהלך שני העשורים האחרונים סובלים תושבי וואדי חילווה מדיכוי הולך וגובר כתוצאה מהקמת ההתנחלות הישראלית “עיר דוד” בשכונתם והרחבתה המתמשכת.

במהלך העשור האחרון, קיבלה עמותת אלע”ד (אל עיר דוד) המיישבת ישראלים בסילוואן ושואפת במוצהר לייצר רוב יהודי בשכונה מרשויות שונות את האחריות על ניהול ואחזקת הגן הלאומי “עיר דוד” שהוא למעשה האתר הארכיאולוגי היחודי והרגיש של ירושלים העתיקה.

תחת שליטת אלע”ד מספר אתר “עיר דוד” סיפור שהוא באופן כמעט בלעדי סיפור יהודי – תנ”כי. האתר מושך מאות אלפי מבקרים בשנה. מבקרים אלו אינם חשופים לעושרו הרב-תרבותי של האתר, ואף מודרכים במקום באופן המתעלם מהכפר הפלסטיני הקיים ובעיותיו, הם אינם מודעים עד כמה הרסניות השפעות אתר הגן הלאומי וההתנחלות בכפר על חיי התושבים שלו.

מרכז מידע ואדי חילווה – סילוואן המנוהל על ידי תושבי השכונה יאפשר למבקרים ותיירים לקבל מידע שלא יקבלו בביקור באתר המנוהל על ידי אלע”ד זאת הן על ידי חומרים מודפסים ותוך שיח עם תושבי השכונה. המרכז יספר את “הסיפור שמאחרי אתר התיירות”, הכולל מידע נרחב יותר על ההיסטוריה של ירושלים העתיקה, על התפתחותו של הכפר סילוואן ועל השינויים שחלו בו מאז החלו נסיונותיה של עמותת אלע”ד להשתלט עליו.

כל מי שמתנגד לעוול הנעשה לתושבי מזרח ירושלים, ומאבקם לחופש ולצדק קרוב לליבו מוזמן לבוא, להכיר את אנשי המרכז ולהפגין תמיכה ביוזמת תושבי ואדי חילווה.

Come support a new Palestinian Information Center which opens in Silwan, East Jerusalem.

The residents of Wadi Hilwah – Silwan invite the public to the opening of Wadi Hilwah Information Center – Silwan.
Over the last two decades, Wadi Hilwah neighborhood has been subjected to severe oppression as a result of the expanding Israeli settlement in the neighborhood.

In Wadi Hilwah the settlers organization Elad, which put as its goal to create a Jewish majority in the neighborhood, also controls and manages the City of David national park which is in fact the unique and politically sensitive archaeological site of ancient Jerusalem.

Under Elad’s control, the City of David tells an almost exclusive Jewish, Biblical story. The site draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. These visitors are not exposed to the rich multi-cultural history of the site, and kept away from the existent Palestinian village and its plight, not knowing how destructive the national park and settlement, have been for the residents’ lives.

Wadi Hilwah Information Center – Silwan, run by the residents of Wadi Hilwah neighborhood, aims to present visitors with the information they will never receive in the Elad-run tourist site. The Information Center tells “The Story Behind the Tourist Site”, which includes broader information about the history of Ancient Jerusalem, the village of Silwan, as well as facts about the changes which occurred in the village since Elad’s attempts to take it over began.
